Project: An Action Plan for a Legislative Campaign to Fix Criminal Procedure Laws

New York state's discovery laws (the laws that govern how and when evidence is provided to the opposing side) unfairly benefit the state at the expense of a criminal defendant's rights and cause cases to drag out, which unfairly harms crime victims. One Thousand Arms partnered with Brooklyn Defender Services to create an action plan with clear steps for developing a legislative campaign to amend those laws.

Project: Developing Recommendations for Shifting the Priorities of the NYPD

Crime is down in New York across the board, but for different reasons in different neighborhoods. In mainly white neighborhoods, crime is down because of investments in civil infrastructure and healthy communities. In mainly black and Latino neighborhoods, crime is down because of hyper-aggressive policing tactics that harm communities and create distrust between the police and the communities they serve. One Thousand Arms worked with the New York Civil Liberties Union to develop a set of recommendations for shifting these priorities so that black and Latino neighborhoods can benefit from investments in civil infrastructure and healthy communities, while keeping crime down.
